In recent times the term ‘Waifu’ has become a popular term of endearment for female anime leads to some of the most popular shows.

Waifu: Origin and Meaning 

Waifu is a term that was first introduced in the English-speaking world through the high-school anime series Azumanga Daioh. The term became popular through a scene of this particular anime. 

In the scene, the main lead’s homeroom teacher Mr. Kimura is seen dropping a photograph of an unknown woman by accident on the classroom floor. When confronted by his students about the identity of the mysterious woman, Mr. Kimura introduces her as “Mai Waifu.”

The series aired in Japan from April to September 2002 and was released in the United States in September 2005. 

Over the years, the term Waifu came to be associated with the female anime characters that one likes, is particularly fond of, or considers special. The opposite of Waifu is the term “Mai Husbando,” which is used to describe one’s favorite male anime character.
